This is the first of a 6-part seminar series that begins in the didactic year and continues through the clinical year. This series explores topics relevant to PA professional practice. This first course in the series will explore the history and development of the profession, and current role of the physician assistant as part of the healthcare team and as part of the U.S. healthcare team and as part of the U.S. healthcare system. The concept of interdisciplinary care teams will be introduced with exploration of the roles and responsibilities of various healthcare professionals. This will serve as a base for interprofessional practice experiences that are integrated throughout the program curriculum. Lastly, PA students will participate in activities and discussions for creating individual plans to be implemented throughout the MPAS degree program to help maintain wellness, reduce stress and preserve a holistic balance to the mind and body.

PA-502:  Evidence Based Medicine

In this course, students will critically analyze medical literature to make clinical decisions based on current best evidence in medicine. Students will systematically analyze medical literature, demonstrate knowledge of study designs and statistical methods, and examine patient characteristics
and preferences. In addition, students will evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic effectiveness of treatment modalities.

PA-503:  Essential Foundations in Clinical Medicine

This course is designed to create a foundation of basic clinical medicine knowledge upon which subsequent system-based modules will build. Students will utilize the anatomy table and computer simulation software throughout the course. Students will examine pharmacology and pharmacogenetics, diagnostic imaging, clinical genetics, immunology and immunotherapy and other essential elements of clinical medicine.

This course will introduce students to basic interviewing techniques and skills to obtain relevant and appropriate history information during a medical interview. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing empathetic-listening and relationship-building communication skills as well as applying a holistic approach that incorporates patient cultural beliefs and environmental influences. Students will also learn the basics of medical documentation,
including an introduction to electronic medical records and informatics necessary for clinical practice.

This course will focus on urgent and emergent medical conditions that are frequently seen in emergency settings. While emergent conditions are covered within each of the comprehensive clinical modules, this course will concentrate on triaging, critically evaluating and treating common emergency issues. The Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinical Clerkship is a four-week required supervised clinical practice experience. This clerkship will provide PA students exposure to gynecologic and obstetric care of female patients. Students will participate in management and treatment of common gynecologic issues. They also will participate in obstetric care including prenatal, labor, delivery and postpartum care.

The Underserved Population Clinical Clerkship is a four-week required supervised clinical practice experience. This clerkship provides PA students an opportunity to participate in delivery of healthcare services to an underserved population. Sites for this rotation will have been designated as a Medically Underserved Area and/or Health Professional Shortage Area site by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration or a similar designation by the Indian Health Service and/or other governmental organizations. There may be opportunities for students to combine this clinical experience with other clinical clerkships such as family practice or emergency medicine rotations if the populations for such rotations meet the criteria described above.

The Elective I Clinical Clerkship is a four-week required supervised clinical practice experience. This clerkship gives the student the ability to choose
an area of clinical interest*. The student may choose from any area of medical practice, from primary care to sub-specialties. All experiences must be in clinical settings, be approved by the director of clinical training, and have adequate hours of patient contact. In cases in which a student has not obtained adequate clinical hours or was identified as having deficiencies in clinical performance in their mandatory supervised clinical
practice experiences, the program reserves the right to require a specific clinical area for the student’s elective.

This course is the second in a series developed to help students in transition periods. This second course includes end-of-program summative evaluations as well as activities that are intended to help students as they prepare for the national certification board examination and for employment as a certified physician assistant. Students work through NCCPA board preparation material and receive instruction on NCCPA certification and licensing processes. Summative evaluations administered in this course will assess student attainment of end-of-program competencies in medical knowledge, interpersonal, clinical and technical skills, professional behaviors, and clinical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. These competencies will be assessed through several methods including written examinations, procedural skills and summative Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Students will take a final summative examination to evaluate scope and depth of medical knowledge. They will also perform objective standardized clinical examinations in which their clinical reasoning and problem-solving abilities, interpersonal skills, physical examination skills, clinical and technical skills, and professionalism will be evaluated. Students must pass all evaluations in order to graduate from the program.

This course represents a culmination of student work longitudinally throughout the clinical year. Students integrate their clinical experiences with their assessment examinations, self-reflection, quality improvement activities and board preparatory work in a portfolio format. The capstone project course reflects the overall synthesis of knowledge, reflective thought, professional growth experiences, and evidence that assignment, course and program learning outcomes have been met. In this course, students will present the results of their capstone portfolio experiences.
